Home based business opportunities seemed to be to the ‘noughties’ what shoulder pads were to the 80’s. In fact the home based business arena is currently growing at an incredible 20% annually.  A quick search on search engine king, Google, reveals a staggering 259 Million results for the search term Home Based Business Opportunities. Where have they all come from, and what is the reason for such prolific rise in the last couple of years? 

Well, the answer is really quite straightforward and can be traced back to the simple market forces of Supply and Demand. The market reacts according to the demands placed upon it, and it would appear that more and more of us are demanding the flexibility of choosing the hours that we work, from the comfort of our own home whilst building up a business that will pay us and not somebody else in years to come. The reality is, there are very few, if any, businesses out there that can offer the convenience, affordability and portability of a home based business opportunity. With the recession showing no signs of relaxing it’s stranglehold on the economy, many more people are being forced to turn to ways of supplementing their main income. In the past, the ‘traditional’ solution to the problem of not being able to make ends meet, was to go out and get a second job. Today’s erratic work schedules and increasingly hectic family lives however, mean that trying to get a part-time job that fits around everything else can be like trying to stuff the proverbial round peg into a square hole. With all the other options now out there on the table, the cumbersome and unwieldy nature of a part-time job that demands a set number of hours at a set time each day, rates a very poor second to the ability to work on our own terms, utilising the pockets of time that we find available to ourselves on a day-to-day basis. It is not that we don’t have the time to put into a business to make money, it is just that if that time has to fit into a rigid ‘9-5’ structure, there are just going to be too many ‘timetable clashes’ for the whole thing to work. And that is assuming that with the job market being the way it is, there are any spare time jobs even available for consideration!

The likes of Robert Kiyosaki have educated us into realising that you don’t get rich working for someone else. We understand that owning your own business is the savvy way to go if you want true time and money freedom. Yet the chasm between going to work and earning a set income every month, and striking out on your own with your own business venture, remains far too wide, and frankly, far too scary, for the majority of us to consider. Enter the new breed of ‘intrapreneurs’ or ‘homepreneurs’. Home based business opportunities can seem to offer the best of both worlds: the attractiveness of being able to build up a 2^nd income stream, with the security of knowing that your ‘regular’ job is going to cover all the bills in the meantime. And they are often seen as a ‘softer landing’ – a less risky alternative to jumping in boots and all into the high risk world of a traditional ‘bricks and mortar business’, with no proven system in place and no guarantee of success.

That oft touted ‘holy grail’ of modern society, ‘Work-Life balance’ is something that is many of us increasingly crave. Yet the overbearing economic pressures of the last couple of years have left us wondering how we are going to achieve that balance and still cover all the bills. Home based business opportunities can be the life raft that ferries us between the two and ultimately unites us with our goal.

Undoubtedly, however, the major factor in the phenomenal rise in home based business opportunities, is the fact that technology has now caught up with our dreams. The advent of broadband and wireless communications has allowed us to run our businesses from home, using the same cutting edge internet and telecommunications technology, competing with even the largest corporations. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, 18.3 million homes in the UK now have access to broadband – that is a massive 28% increase in the last 3 years. And 67% of us now use the internet on a daily basis. In today’s increasingly competitive economic world, it is no longer a pipe dream to work from home, it makes perfect business sense.  

Flexibility, affordability and convenience have become the watchwords of modern society. And with more and more families sick and tired of being stuck in the ‘ratrace’ and desperate for a way to achieve more Time and Money freedom, it will come as no surprise to learn that the current growth curve in home based business opportunities is set to continue into 2010 and beyond as ever greater numbers of us look to both have our cake and eat it!
